California is the leading U.S. solar state, with the greatest number of residential and commercial solar projects, as well as megawatts installed and the average cost per watt. This status is largely owed to the passing of the California Solar Initiative (CSI) in 2007. CSI is a solar energy rebate program funded by the state of California. It is also part of the Go Solar California campaign, alongside other rebate programs such as New Solar Homes.

Who Can Apply for the CSI Program?
Do you want to know if you’re eligible for The California Solar Initiative? As a San Diego home or business owner, you are eligible for CSI if you are a customer of one of these investor-owned utilities:
- Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E)
- Southern California Edison (SCE)
- San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)
Solar-Based Initiatives within CSI
There are several solar initiatives available to California residents as part of the California Solar Initiative. Different incentive levels are devised to encourage maximum solar generation throughout California. The incentives are informed by solar panel performance, taking into account the following factors: installation angle, tilt and location.
CSI General Market Program – Solar installation incentive for existing households, as well as new or existing government, agricultural, non-profit and commercial buildings. It is a rebate program for customers in PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E territories.
CSI-Thermal Program – An incentive for California homes and businesses (customers in PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E territories) for funding the installation of solar water heating systems, that is – solar thermal systems.
SASH (Single Family Affordable Solar Housing) – An incentive given to low-income California residents for installing various solar technologies on their homes. The idea is to assist these homeowners in reducing monthly energy bills without increasing the expenses. Applicants must be customers of (PG&E), (SCE) or (SDG&E), occupy the residence planned as a place of solar installation, have the income of 80% of the AMI (Area Median Income) or less. Finally, the residents needs to be compliant with California Public Utilities Code (P.U.) 2852.
MASH (Multifamily Affordable Housing) – A program aimed at California residents of multifamily affordable housing, encouraging the installation of solar PV cells and solar water heating technology.
CSI RD&D – A solar grant program offering financial incentives for the research, development, demonstration, and deployment of solar technologies.

IMPORTANT FOR RESIDENTS OF SAN DIEGO: San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has announced the switch to time-of-use charges of the tiered systems in place. In other words, power usage will be more expensive between 5 pm and 9 pm. Since this is the time period when the most power is used in households, homeowners are going to experience a significant increase in their utility bills. The bills are expected to double in some cases. A number of San Diego households have already been switched to the new power usage charging system, while it’s expected the total switch will be completed in 2019.
How to Avoid the Increase in Energy Bills?
We suggest the installation of solar batteries, as they are sure to provide an outstanding ROI. Is you are a San Diego home or business owner, you can use a solar array to charge the battery during the day, so it can run the house or commercial property between 5 pm and 9 pm. By going solar, you can easily avoid the higher rates!
